I don’t believe in marriage

I don’t believe in marriage.
No, I really don’t. Let me be clear about that.
I think at worst,
it’s a hostile political act,
a way for small-minded men to keep women in the house and out of the way, wrapped up in the guise of tradition and conservative religious nonsense.
At best, it’s a happy delusion –
these two people who truly love each other
and have no idea how truly miserable
they’re about to make each other.
But, when two people know that,
and they decide with eyes wide open
to face each other and get married anyway,
then I don’t think it’s conservative or delusional.
I think it’s radical and courageous and very romantic.

The Apache Wedding Prayer

Now you will feel no rain,  –                                                                                                For each of you will be shelter to the other.

Now you will feel no cold,  –                                                                                               For each of you will be warmth to the other.

Now there is no more loneliness,   –                                                                                 For each of you will be companion to the other.

Now you are two bodies,   –                                                                                            But there is one life before you.

May beauty surround you both in the journey ahead; And for all the years to come.

Go now to your dwelling place, To enter into the days of your togetherness.

And may your days be good and long upon this earth.  Your adventure has just begun!
